| The 1000 Islands area of northern New York is blessed with thousands of overnight accommodations, from rustic campground sites to resort rooms complete with Jacuzzi tubs. But only one place offers a castle as an extra added perk for the lucky persons staying there: Singer Castle on Dark Island. It's been said that here a couple can be king and queen of the castle, at least for a night. Singer Castle, located in Chippewa Bay about ten miles down river from Alexandria Bay, is offering its Luxury Suite for rent. The Luxury Suite is located on the third floor of the magnificent castle, high above the St. Lawrence River and overlooking both the Canadian channel and the American Seaway. With windows on three sides, guests are treated to a breathtaking view and feel as if they are suspended in the clouds, with only the birds as their companions. The suite consists of four rooms in the original Bourne guest wing. The first room is a small bedroom with double bed and two cozy chairs in front of a fireplace, furniture that was original to the castle. This bedroom is used when the group is larger than two people. Next is a tile bathroom with period-style fixtures overlooking the American shipping channel, a butler's closet refitted as a beverage/breakfast center, with cold juices, soda, Singer Castle bottled water, coffee and tea service, and pasties. The continental breakfast can be served anywhere the guests desire: outside under the Pergola, in the Tea Room, or in their bedroom. The final room in the wing is the actual Luxury Suite bedroom. This is not merely a bedroom, however; it has a California king canopy bed with luxury bedding, chocolate brown leather settee, overstuffed suede love seat that opens into a queen-size bed and matching upholstered easy chair, entertainment armoire with TV/VCR/DVD, fireplace, turn-of-the-century-styled writing desk, and cozy corner table to sit at, while enjoying the marvelous Canadian sunset or a cup of refreshing tea. And for those who can't leave their work behind, there's high speed wireless Internet access. The suite will accommodate two people, and is perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, birthdays, or any special occasion, according to Joyce Cattelane, Singer Castle spokesperson. “The price includes a private tour and a romantic catered dinner, which can be served anywhere on the castle grounds. But what makes our luxury suite accommodations really unique is that our guests have the run of the castle: they can walk the castle greens, examine the knights in the Great Hall, or admire the mounted trophies in the drawing room. The castle is “theirs” for the night – and there's nowhere else in the 1000 Islands that you'll have a similar opportunity. It's truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that guests will rave about for years.” Built in 1905 by Frederick G. Bourne, the fourth president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, this five-story granite castle with Spanish red tile roofs near Chippewa Bay has been open to the public under the current owners since 2003. Members of the Bourne family lived in it for over 60 years, and most of the original furniture and antiques are still on the island. When the Owners Association of Dark Island Tours, Inc. purchased the castle in 2002, their goal was to recreate the historical accuracy of the Bourne era for future visitors, and they have worked hard to make this happen. All admissions monies are used for further restoration efforts, and the castle is open for guided tours daily until mid-October. Interested parties can call (315) 486-3275 to reserve the Luxury Suite or visit the castle's website at www.singercastle.com for more information. |
