"CASTLE ROSE GARDEN BEING RESTORED"
<back>
Summer resident of the 1000 Islands, Kathleen Murphy a garden consultant and the proprietor of Olde Tyme Again, a nursery in Camillus, NY specializing in heirloom plants and gardens is sharing her expertise with the staff of Singer Castle. She has begun restoration work on the Rose Garden a favored site for the weddings that are held on Dark Island during the summer months. The walled garden overlooks the American Channel and the castle's South Boat House and Clock Tower.

In addition to planting English roses, Kathleen used heirloom flowers that are authentic to the period in which the castle was constructed. She prefers to use plants that have a subtle beauty and fragrance unlike many of today's large and overblown flowers.

As the Singer Castle Rose Garden matures, those spending time there will be able to imagine the garden as it was when Frederick Bourne and his family walked the paths in the summer sun and sat on the stone benches to watch the St. Lawrence River as it flowed by. They will see and hopefully appreciate the beauty and gentle scents of the Roses as well as the Balcony Petunia, China Asters, Cleome, Pinks, Columbine, Delphinium, Evening Scented Stock, Flax, Forget Me Not, Foxglove, Jacob's Ladder, Lamb's Ears, Lavender, Love In A Mist, Malva, Musk Mallow, Nicotiana, Painted Tongue, Peach-Leaved Bellflower, Rose Campion, Rose Mallow, Snapdragon, Spiked Speedwell, Stock, Sweet Rocket, and Sweet William.

Kathleen is committed to nurturing this garden and to seeing this special project results in a garden that will delight the many visitors to Singer Castle on Dark Island.
