IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 14, 2003 "Singer Castle's August Opening" | <back> |
| Singer Castle was originally built as The
Towers on Dark Island through the architectural genius of Ernest Flagg and the
vision of Frederick Gilbert Bourne. Ernest Flagg, who was noted in the early 1900's
as a Beaux Art architect, created many spectacular structures. Those included
Indian Neck in Oakdale, the residence of Frederick Bourne and his family, and
the spectacular Singer Building in New York City, which for a brief 6 months,
held the title of the tallest building in New York. Flagg was asked by Bourne to design a 'hunting retreat' for his family. Flagg designed the hunting retreat after a castle referred in a book he had just read titled Woodstock, by Sir Walter Scott. The castle features a Clock Tower (a replica of one on the Bourne estate),a labyrinth of 28 rooms and secret passageways. The castle stands today, 100 years later as a unique and amazing structure. The owners of Singer Castle are proud to open the doors of the Castle to the public on Saturday, August 2nd. The Castle staff will provide guided tours through the castle and some of the grounds at a cost of $10 for adults and $6 for children (aged 6-12). Group tour discounts will also apply. Each tour will begin at the South boathouse, and will enter the Castle through the main doors of the Great Hall complete with armor and mirrors of infinity. Tours will feature marble crafted fireplaces, Italian carved furniture, English dishes, Oriental rugs and period pieces. The castle is also proud to feature pieces by the famous Frederick Remington, who was a contemporary and neighbor of original owner Bourne. Remington had a studio at a visible nearby island and painted an impressionistic study of Dark Island. In a promotional partnership, the Castle encourages visitors to see more of Remington's original works, including the Dark Island study, at the Remington Museum in nearby Ogdensburg. The Castle is currently hiring additional Tour Guide staff for both full-time and part-time positions. These positions are seasonal positions, offer paid training and are immediately available. Interested individuals looking for a unique work experience may contact V.P. Operations, Deborah Lack at Singer Castle (315) 324-3275.
